The Healthiest Thing I Ever Did Had Nothing to Do With Food
For years, I believed becoming healthier meant changing what I ate.
I avoided sugar and processed foods.
I experimented with different diets, detoxes and cleanses.
I exercised hard almost every day.
I took the supplements and tracked my food.
I did everything I thought a "healthy" person was supposed to do.
Looking back...
The healthiest thing I ever did had nothing to do with food.
It wasn't giving up sugar or alcohol.
It wasn't quitting coffee.
It wasn't eating organic.
It wasn't finding the perfect workout.
It was changing the story my nervous system had been living from.
I Thought I Was Obsessed With Health
Looking back...I was obsessed with avoiding illness.
When my dad died suddenly, my world changed overnight.
As a little girl, I learned one very painful lesson:
Life can change in an instant.
Without realizing it, I spent the next thirty years trying to make sure that never happened again.
I became incredibly disciplined.
I wanted to know the healthiest foods.
The best supplements.
The best workout.
The latest research.
If I could just do everything "right," maybe I could prevent the unexpected.
It didn't stop with me.
I worried about my mum too.
I wanted her to eat better.
Exercise more.
Take better care of herself.
At the time, I thought I was simply caring.
Looking back, I can see something much deeper:
I couldn't bear the thought of losing someone unexpectedly again.
So I tried to control the one thing I believed I could:
Health.
Healthy Habits Can Sometimes Be Driven by Fear
From the outside, my habits looked incredibly healthy. I looked disciplined and strong.
From the inside...
Many of them were driven by fear.
Fear of getting sick, fear of losing someone.
Fear that if I stopped trying so hard, something bad would happen.
Most people assume healthy habits are always healthy.
But the reason behind the habit matters.
You can eat a beautiful salad because you love and respect your body.
Or...
You can eat the exact same salad because you're terrified of what will happen if you don't.
The behaviour looks identical.
But the message your nervous system receives is completely different.
Your Body Responds to the Story You're Living
This is one of the biggest shifts I've made in my work over the past few years.
The body doesn't only respond to food.
It responds to the meaning you’ve given your experiences.
If your nervous system has spent years believing:
"I have to hold everything together."
"I can never let my guard down."
"I always have to be the strong one."
"Something bad could happen at any moment."
...your body adapts to those signals every single day.
That adaptation influences how you experience stress, sleep, cravings, recovery, energy, and your relationship with food and movement.
Your nervous system is like the conductor of an orchestra. It continuously communicates with your hormones, immune system, digestive system, and metabolism, coordinating how your body responds to the world around you. If the conductor is constantly receiving the message that life is uncertain, or unsafe, every system adjusts accordingly.
Change the message, and the body has the opportunity to respond differently.
For years, I thought I needed more discipline.
What I actually needed was to feel safe.
When the Story Changed, My Habits Changed Too
The biggest surprise?
I didn't force myself to give up coffee.
One day, I simply realised I didn't need it anymore.
It wasn’t that I thought coffee had suddenly become unhealthy.
It was because no longer needed something to push me through exhaustion.
Sugar gradually lost its grip too.
Exercise stopped feeling like punishment.
Health stopped feeling like a full-time job.
For the first time in my life, I wasn't trying to outrun the future.
I was actually living in the present.
These days, health looks very different.
It looks like laughing with my boys on a bike ride along the coast.
Cooking simple meals because I enjoy nourishing myself.
Strength training because I love feeling capable.
Resting when I'm tired and not because I believe I have to earn it.
I haven’t become less healthy, but I’ve stopped being afraid.
Maybe Your Body Isn't Asking for More Discipline
If you're doing everything "right" but still feel stuck...
If you're constantly thinking about food...
If you're exhausted despite eating well...
If your body no longer seems to respond the way it used to...
Perhaps the next step isn't another diet.
Perhaps it's understanding why your body developed these patterns in the first place.
That's where lasting change begins.
Ready to Discover What's Really Behind Your Struggles with Food and Weight?
If you've spent years trying different diets, workout plans, supplements, or strategies but still feel stuck, the missing piece isn't another plan.
It's understanding why your body developed these patterns in the first place.
In my one-to-one sessions, we don't spend months managing symptoms. Together, we uncover the deeper story your nervous system has been living from: the beliefs, experiences, and adaptations that have shaped your relationship with food, your body, and your health.
That root pattern becomes clear in our very first session.
And once you understand the story your body has been responding to, everything begins to make sense. From there, we start rewriting that story so your body no longer has to rely on the same coping strategies to keep you safe.
If you're ready to stop fighting your body and finally understand what it's been trying to communicate, I'd love to work with you.
