What If Your Body Isn't Resisting Change... What If It's Protecting You?

For most of my 20s, I believed that if I just found the right nutrition plan, the right workout, or the right level of discipline, my body would finally respond.
But the more I worked with women—and the more I understood my own story—the more I realised something important:
The body's first priority isn't weight loss.
It's survival.
Think about it.
If your brain believes you're under constant pressure, never doing enough, always rushing, always giving, never resting, your body receives one message over and over again:
"Now isn't the time to let go. We need to stay prepared."
That doesn't mean your body is consciously trying to hold on to weight.
It means it's constantly adapting to the environment it believes it's living in—not just your physical environment, but especially your emotional one.
Why Doing Everything "Right" Doesn't Always Work
That's why so many women tell me:
"I'm eating well."
"I'm exercising."
"I'm trying so hard."
And yet...
They still feel exhausted.
Their cravings don't go away.
Their motivation disappears.
Their body doesn't seem to respond the way it used to.
Most people think the answer is to try harder.
Be more disciplined.
Follow a stricter diet.
Exercise for longer.
But what if your body isn't being stubborn?
What if it's simply responding to the environment it's living in—both physically and emotionally?
Two Women. Two Very Different Messages.
Imagine two women.
Both eat the same breakfast.
Both complete the same workout.
Both sleep seven hours.
But one spends her day constantly rushing, worrying about everyone else, putting herself at the bottom of the list, feeling guilty when she sits down, saying yes when she wants to say no, and believing she has to hold everything together or things will fall apart.
The other sets boundaries.
She asks for help when she needs it.
She rests without guilt.
She no longer feels responsible for everyone else's happiness.
From the outside, their lives might look remarkably similar.
But to their nervous systems, they're completely different environments.
One nervous system receives the message:
"We're under pressure. Stay alert. Keep going. Hold on to your resources... just in case."
The other receives the message:
"We're okay. We can do this without abandoning ourselves."
Your body is always adapting to those messages.
What Has Your Body Been Protecting You From?
This is one of the questions I ask almost every client:
What has your body been trying to protect you from?
Maybe it's years of pressure.
Maybe it's grief you never had space to process.
Maybe it's believing you have to earn your rest.
Maybe it's feeling like your worth depends on how much you achieve or how much you do for everyone else.
These patterns don't just shape how you think.
They shape the environment your body has been adapting to every single day.
What Happens When the Environment Changes?
When I help my clients shift these deeper patterns, something remarkable often happens.
Exercise starts feeling like something they do because they enjoy caring for their body—not because they're trying to fix it.
Healthy food becomes nourishment instead of another set of rules designed to correct what's "wrong" with them.
Rest no longer feels lazy or unsafe.
It becomes part of caring for themselves.
And their body finally has the opportunity to respond from a place of support instead of constantly preparing for the next challenge.
The goal isn't simply to lose weight.
It's to create an internal environment where your body no longer has to live as though it's constantly surviving.
A Question I'd Love You to Reflect On
Finish this sentence:
"I'll finally be okay when..."
Don't overthink it.
Simply write down the first thing that comes to mind.
Then ask yourself:
What if I didn't have to wait until then to begin treating myself with kindness?
Because here's what I've learned after years of working with women...
The women who experience the biggest, most lasting transformations aren't the most disciplined.
They're the ones who stop fighting themselves and start working with their true needs.
